Flip Mk.II

My brother Jan blogged about flipping the inbox as a great way to get oldest mails at the top, in turn as a way to weed out old mails, in turn as a way to reduce the number of looming mails in the inbox to zero. I did this too, and it works! Well, I didn’t actually “flip” it because Gmail always shows newest mails at the top. But I’m at zero; I only keep mails in the inbox for a day or less. New mails are either “done” right away when I check mail, or delegated to one of these folders:
* reply-now
* reply-later
* action-now
* action-later
where “now” means “the first time I have scheduled for doing mails” because I try to only be on mail at specific times, not all the time. That gives me peace in the meantime. (Perhaps I’ll turn off my cell phone next.)

Is Dvorak uninternational?

I finally managed to learn Dvorak after all. It feels nice (easy on the fingers) but I’m still not altogether convinced that it was such a brilliant idea: I took the leap while I was between jobs and trained a lot with the “Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor” – that was essential! But it’s a nuisance to use other (normal) keyboards – and I especially notice that when using my (qwerty) PDA. And I also notice that there’s only one way to really learn it: type A LOT!! Here’s a Danish Dvorak layout

My brother Jan became hooked on the Dvorak keyboard layout years ago and has praised it sky-high. It seems smarter than the regular Qwerty keyboard layout, but it’s not being used for reasons of tradition: Qwerty has been the industry for a hundred years, who cares if it’s really impractical? The users will learn to deal with it. Besides, Qwerty is the default on every device out there, and the whole world has already struggled to learn ten-finger typing on it.

So why switch? One has to learn something first, but it might as well be something smart. That’s why. Continue reading

Time for an old brain

I recently switched from a Psion to a Windows PDA, and I’m beginning to regret it (except for the gained experience). As it turns out, my fears and objections against Windows Mobile are mostly true: Continue reading

Why didn’t I anticipate this?

As I’ve written before, I switched from my Psion to a PDA-phone. Such an all-in-one device is useful, but I had not realized one result of this: While I’m holding my phone to the ear, I can’t access my PDA! Try checking your calendar while on the phone… oops.

Of course, this is exactly why I have a Bluetooth headset, and when I use that, there’s no problem. Except that the PDA’s Bluetooth radio seems rather poor; the other party hears me through static noise much of the time. What good is a quality headset if the PDA can’t cope?
